GRADUATION

IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation)
ABJJF (Australian Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation)
JJGJF (Jiu Jitsu Global Federation)

Junior Belts (4-15 years)
There are 4 junior-coloured belts:
*Grey
*Yellow
*Orange
*Green

Generally, most instructors and schools include the belts with the white stripes and black stripes as an added incentive for promotion.  The table below illustrates the minimum age for each coloured belt.

Minimum Age for each Junior Belt

Grey Belt: 1st coloured belt
Yellow Belt: minimum age 7
Orange Belt: minimum age 10
Green Belt: minimum age 13

The grey belt can be awarded to any student under 16, however, the head instructor might prefer to award belts based on age eligibility.

TACTICAL BJJ
White to Black Belt Timeframes

White to Blue Belt is 2 years minimum based on twice a week training.
Blue to Purple Belt is 2 years minimum based on twice a week training.
Purple to Brown Belt is 2-3 years minimum based on twice a week training.
Brown to Black Belt is 2-4 years minimum based on twice a week training.

Note: The timeframes mention are not fixed, but recommended minimums. Your Professor determines how long each practitioner should remain on each belt based on individual merit. Merit includes, ability, character, loyalty to the club, conduct & contributions to the community and personal progress. If a student has podium placement or won a Nationally or Internationally recognised Annual Tournament, it is recommended that the following year the student is promoted to compete at the next appropriate higher grade until Black Belt.

Competition is NOT compulsory, however, students who are training more than twice a week and are regularly competing or assisting in coaching classes may naturally progress faster than those who do not compete.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is complex, difficult and dangerous, but can also be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding activities you can undertake. Progress must be earned.
Respecting your teachers and teammates is essential.

• Minimum age for Blue Belt is 16 years old (as stated in the IBJJF rules).  Young persons who have been training for a number of years does not necessarily mean they go straight to blue belt when they reach 16.  Most instructors will give a white belt with stripes when they reach 16.

• IBJJF rules state an instructor can only grade as long as they are 2 belts above the student to be graded.  For example, a brown belt can grade to blue, a black belt can grade to purple etc.

• If an instructor is not senior enough to grade a student to the next belt, then this should be done by an instructor who is eligible to award that rank.

• Instructor Bars: these are are located at either end of the belt on the red patch.  These are not a rank and are only given to instructors.

1st Degree to 2nd Degree is 3 years minimum.
2nd Degree to 3rd Degree is 3 years minimum.
